Albie Morkel Named Joburg Super Kings Head Coach for SA20 Season 5

Albie Morkel Joburg Super Kings Head Coach : Former South Africa all-rounder Albie Morkel has been appointed as the head coach of Joburg Super Kings for the upcoming SA20 Season 5. The franchise confirmed the appointment on Thursday, with Morkel replacing Stephen Fleming, who guided the team during the first four seasons of the competition.

A Familiar Face Takes Charge

Morkel shares a long-standing association with the Super Kings family. He represented Chennai Super Kings as a player in the IPL and later became part of the Joburg Super Kings coaching staff when the SA20 league was launched. Having worked closely with the squad since the inaugural season, he is now set to lead the franchise as head coach.

Franchise Backs Morkel’s Leadership

Super Kings owner Rupa Gurunath said Morkel has been an important member of the coaching group and has contributed significantly to player development over the past few years. She added that his understanding of the team’s culture and strong relationship with the players made him the ideal choice to guide the franchise into its next phase.

Joburg Super Kings director KS Viswanathan also welcomed the appointment, stating that Morkel’s experience as both a player and a coach within the Super Kings setup, along with his knowledge of South African cricket, gives the franchise confidence for the future.

Morkel Excited for the New Challenge

Speaking after his appointment, Morkel described becoming head coach as one of the proudest moments of his cricket journey. He said representing the Super Kings as a player and now leading one of the franchise’s teams from the dugout makes the opportunity even more special.

The former all-rounder also expressed confidence in the current squad and said his focus would be on building a strong team environment while helping the players perform to their full potential.

Aiming for a Better SA20 Campaign

Joburg Super Kings reached the playoffs last season, finishing fourth in the league stage before their campaign ended with a defeat in the Eliminator. Under Albie Morkel’s leadership, the franchise will now aim to take the next step and challenge for its maiden SA20 title in Season 5.
