Man City 3-2 Ipswich: Maresca Makes History

City’s win was not routine. Phil Foden put them ahead in the 19th minute, but Ipswich hit back through Maeda two minutes later. Erling Haaland restored the lead in the 34th minute and added a second in the 69th, only for Flemming to score a late penalty that made the finish nervous. The result still made Enzo Maresca the first manager in Premier League history to win his first seven league games in charge of a club, and City became only the third team to win their first seven league matches of a season. City lead the table on 21 points. You can read about their midweek defeat to PSG in our Man City vs PSG match report.

Forest 0-1 Arsenal: A Grind-It-Out Win

Arsenal were far from their best at the City Ground, and Mikel Arteta looked frustrated for long periods as Forest defended deep. The breakthrough came in the 80th minute, when Noni Madueke cut in from the left and his shot deflected past Matz Sels. It was Arsenal’s only effort on target in the game, but it was enough for their sixth win in seven league games. It also means they have taken 18 points from a possible 21 for only the fourth time in Premier League history, and they remain second, three points behind City.

Leeds 1-1 Man United: Carrick’s Winless Run Continues

Bryan Mbeumo gave United the lead at Elland Road, but Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalised to make it 1-1. It was his 18th goal for Leeds since arriving, and it stretched United’s winless run in the league to five games. Manager Michael Carrick took the positives from the performance, but he will be asking where the next win is coming from. Leeds are seventh on 10 points.

Tottenham Finally Win, Brighton Dazzle

Tottenham’s 3-1 win over Coventry gave them their first league win of the season. James Maddison scored a superb opener in the 14th minute, Jack Rudoni equalised for Coventry shortly after half-time, and Marmoush made it 2-1 before Davies sealed the win deep into stoppage time. For Coventry, it was a first defeat after their 4-1 win at Newcastle, which we covered in our Coventry 4-1 Newcastle report.

Elsewhere, Brighton thrashed rivals Crystal Palace 5-0 and moved up to third place, two points behind Arsenal.

Premier League Table After Matchweek 7

  • 1. Manchester City: 21 points from 7 games
  • 2. Arsenal: 18 points
  • 3. Brighton: 16 points (two behind Arsenal)
  • 7. Leeds United: 10 points
  • 10. Ipswich Town: 9 points

Positions are from reports published after the weekend, and midweek games will change them.

What It Means for the Title Race

City and Arsenal both did what they needed to do, and that gap of three points is the main story. City have the better record but have shown some defensive weaknesses, while Arsenal are winning without playing well, which is often a sign of a team with title-winning habits. City’s season is also overshadowed by the threat of punishment after the club was found guilty of financial rule breaches, though Maresca has appeared unfazed by it.
