How England Got Here
England’s Nations League campaign began with a chaotic 3-2 home defeat to world champions Spain at Wembley. They had a 2-1 lead at half-time, but Spain turned the game around after the break, and England lost a match they led at the interval for the first time since 2019. One report noted that Harry Kane’s standing foot gave way as he took a penalty in that game, a moment that could have changed the result.
England responded well in the reverse fixture. On September 29 they beat Czechia 2-0 in Prague, with Anthony Gordon and Harry Kane on the scoresheet, and the hosts played much of the match with ten men. The win also ended a run of six games without a clean sheet, which had been a worry for Tuchel’s defence. England then travelled to Croatia on October 3 before coming back to Wembley for this return match.
England Team News and Defensive Questions
Tuchel’s squad has been hit by withdrawals during this window. Man City defender Nico O’Reilly left the camp with an injury, sat out the win in Prague and was sent back to his club. Ezri Konsa was also a doubt earlier in the window after missing training with a minor problem.
Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was expected to take the next two games after James Trafford started the first two, so he should be in goal again at Wembley. Up front, England still have plenty of attacking quality, with Kane, Bukayo Saka, Jude Bellingham and Gordon all in the squad. The main question is whether the back line can stay solid for a second game in a row.
Czechia: A Team in Transition
Czechia come into this match in a difficult spell. They went out of the World Cup in the group stage and then appointed Santi Denia as head coach, replacing Miroslav Koubek. Their opening Nations League game ended in a 2-1 home defeat to Croatia, and the loss to England in Prague followed.
They still have players who can cause problems, including Adam Hlozek, Pavel Sulc and veteran right-back Vladimir Coufal. Tuchel said before the first meeting that Czechia were well organised, with dangerous wingers and attacking full-backs, so England cannot expect an easy night despite the earlier win.
Head-to-Head Record
England have a strong record against Czechia. In nine meetings they have won six, drawn two and lost one. Their last competitive meeting at Wembley was a 1-0 win at Euro 2020, and their biggest win in the fixture was a 5-0 victory in March 2019.
What This Match Means for the Group
The top two teams in each League A group reach the quarter-finals, so every point matters in a group that also contains Spain and Croatia. A win at Wembley would give England breathing space and put pressure on their rivals, while another slip would make the final two group games in November much harder.
